Your dog will increase focus, confidence and problem-solving skills. Watch your dog burn off excess energy with mental stimulation and learn to love his crate. Great for dogs who have forgotten some foundation behaviors, or who need a warm-up for Intermediate Class. Prerequisite: Basic Obedience or permission of instructor. The Perfect Gift... What it’s like to fly combat jets down between the trees. Whether you have ever flown a jet, or just wished to do so, and whether you served in Vietnam or just read about it, you will be riveted by this fast-paced and vivid account in prose and poetry that tells the story of a special breed of men. These were the hand-picked few who led death-defying lives as F-100 Super Sabre pilots. "Songs" tells the story of the "Hun Drivers" in war and peace, who flew low and fast between the trees with troops in contact day or night, or spent weeks away from home and family on nuclear alert, hoping that the red phone that signaled WW III would never ring. Their plane was called “The Widow Maker” for good reason, as you soon learn.

Songs From A Distant Cockpit puts you in the cockpit and in among these single-seat, single-engine fighter pilots as they trained in the “most dangerous plane ever built.” It brings you along as they learned how to fly it, and how to survive in it, and the sudden risks and terrors that they faced often as they flew. If you’ve ever wondered "What it's like to fly a close-air-support fighter bombers" in combat in Vietnam, or on other missions that pushed the ragged edges of the flight envelope, with Death an all-too-frequent wingman, then you’ll have a vivid understanding when you read this book.

Published just in time for Christmas sales, and available now through Amazon.com (for $12.99 plus shipping), it will also be available in early December through Kindle Books (price not yet determined). In 2014, "Songs" will also be a book on tape. Go to www.songsfromadistantcockpit.com for more information, the full Chapter 1, and to enter the "Contacts and Orders" link for special discounts and to place an order directly to the author. Add postal fees for each order, or plan for hand delivery, which saves these costs: $2.98 for 1 book; $3.43 for 2; $3.88 for 3 and $4.29 for four. Locally, contact John J. Schulz, Professor Emeritus, Boston University, 616 Tazewell Ave., Cape Charles, VA 23310, 757-331-1522757-331-1522 h.; 617-775-7741617-775-7741 cell

I rescued two really great Abyssinian cats from the dog catcher last year in Onancock. Their home did not work out and the person moved away. I have been keeping them in hopes of finding them a home. The mom, Scout, is tiny and very shy. Cubby, the son, is very friendly and happy go lucky. They are spayed/neutered with shots. They just need a home. They prefer to be outdoors and just need a porch and food once a day. If interested, please call Sandy at 331-2087.

A message from Eastern Shore Coalition Against Domestic Violence: ESCADV is a non-profit organization that serves victims of crime, assault and battery that violence happens in the privacy of a home. The perpetrator is someone professing love, care, and concern. Domestic violence has nothing to do with love and everything to do with having power and control of another human being. We did not receive funding from the Commonwealth of Virginia or any other organization for the actual safe haven shelter we run in conjunction with our program. Without the shelter, we are very limited in the options we can provide to victims of domestic violence. There is simply no other organization to provide services exclusively to victims of domestic violence. The Eastern Shore Coalition Against Domestic Violence is turning to our community. We need your help. Over the next week or so you may receive a letter as a part of our capital campaign. Even if you do not receive a letter, any help you can provide to allow us to continue our mission is much appreciated. If you would like additional information please call 787-1329. Thank you for your support, Cathy Fredholm, Executive Director, Eastern Shore Coalition Against Domestic Violence

Northampton County is using Everbridge Aware™ for Citizen Alerts, an emergency notification system provided by Everbridge, the leading emergency notification system provider, to communicate with thousands of businesses and residents in minutes in an emergency. The County will be able to alert residents about severe weather, fires, floods, toxic environmental issues and other emergencies using Everbridge Aware for Citizen Alerts.

Messages can be sent to residents on any communication path desired – cell phone, home phone, email, text messaging, fax, pager, PDA and more – ensuring that residents and County staff receive life-saving emergency information and important public service announcements in minutes. Citizens listed in the County’s 9-1-1 database will be automatically subscribed to alerts by phone, though any citizen may self-register, provide additional contact information or opt out. In addition, the County plans to use the Everbridge system to notify residents about other important activities, such as road closures and water utility maintenance. "We have a commitment to our citizens to protect them from any danger that threatens our community. The ability to reach all residents quickly during an emergency to warn them and provide guidance is critical to upholding that commitment, which is why we are rolling out Everbridge Aware for Citizen Alerts,” said Hollye Carpenter, Coordinator of Emergency Management. “The Everbridge emergency notification system ensures the County will be able to react accurately and efficiently in a natural disaster or other crisis.”

To sign up for emergency alerts, please visit http://www.co.northampton.va.us/publicsafety/es_home.html.

FYI - Local Businesses: Here’ a suggestion for something that might benefit many local businesses, thanks to Betis’ Maureen Pettine. While in NJ recently, she noticed in several of the places she visited (bakeries, restaurants, etc. - you get the picture) that they had bar codes hanging on the doors or near the cash registers that allowed people with smart phones to scan the bar code of their business to "like" them on Facebook. She came back, made one for Betis and posted it in their front window. It's free and it might be something easy for our businesses to enjoy. The link to create the barcode is :http://spotlike.com/.
